Sweet Dumplings

An apple dumpling is an old-fashioned dessert that is served warm, sometimes a la mode and sometimes also gilded with caramel sauce. It usually is made by wrapping pastry dough around a whole apple and baking it, but some versions are made with soft apple slices. At the Dutch Restaurant in Middletown, Delaware, warm apple dumplings are presented in a bowl and accompanied by a pitcher of cool whole milk. Pour the milk on the dumpling as you eat. Other fruits that make good dessert dumplings are peaches, plums, and pears.
