Preserves

In the sweet-fruit condiment family, preserves is the overarching term that includes jam, marmalade, and jelly. In most instances, the word preserves is used when the stuff in question actually contains bits or pieces of fruit. Fruit-full preserves are especially appreciated when they accompany pancakes – such as the lingonberry preserves that come with Swedish pancakes at Seattle’s Portage Bay Cafe – and biscuits, as they do at Sugar Pine Cafe in Mariposa, California, and the Beacon Light Tea Room and Loveless Cafe in mid-Tennessee.
