While “old fashioned” is not formally a type of donut, to call one old-fashioned is to make it clear that it’s not an airweight Krispy Kreme; it’s not salted caramel-flavored, and it’s not a fusion of Vietnamese iced coffee and sriracha. It’s a baking-powder-raised cake donut, faintly crisp on the outside, creamy and cakelike within, tasting primarily like … a donut! It may be plastered with cinnamon sugar or gilded with chocolate or vanilla frosting, but any tricks beyond these take it from old-fashioned to newfangled.
