Caprese is the term for an Italian mix of mozzarella cheese and tomatoes garlanded with fresh basil leaves. It’s typically served as a salad, but also makes a fine topping for bruschetta or the interior of a grilled cheese sandwich. Marie’s Coffee Deli in Los Angeles offers a breakfast caprese sandwich, which adds egg and basil pesto to the formula.
