About Cuisine

From Southern Connecticut to Downeast Maine, informal waterside joints sell crisp-crusted fried clams by the pint (in a cardboard container), in a toasted roll (like a hot dog), or as part of a platter (with French fries and/or onion rings). Clams are available either whole-belly (gooey inside) or as strips (chewy and less oceanic). Service is “eat-in-the-rough” style, meaning you place your order and wait for your number to be called, then tote your own food to a picnic table. The best clam shacks and the best clams are found along the North Shore of Massachusetts.
