When we started hunting Roadfood many years ago, good tacos were hard to find anywhere other than the southwest borderlands and southern California. Today, great ones are nearly everywhere. Here is a baker’s dozen list of Roadfood favorites coast to coast.

El Camión

A food truck and casual restaurant in rural Connecticut, El Camión serves artisan Mexican tacos and quesadillas at modest prices.

A restaurant in the back room of an old South Carolina gas station, 3 Caminos serves wonderful from-scratch Mexican fare along with brilliant house-made salsas.

Taqueria El Patron

From-scratch Mexican cooking makes Taqueria El Patron an Augusta destination restaurant for exemplary tacos, burritos & flautas as well as grand chicken mole.

Fuel City Tacos

A Dallas convenience store, gas station and beer depot, Fuel City offers delicious, inexpensive tacos. Dining facilities are just a few picnic tables outside.

Maria’s Taco Xpress

An only-in-Austin vibe permeates Maria’s Taco Xpress. Come for the migas breakfast tacos on Sunday mornings; stay for “hippie church.”

Taco Taco Cafe

A small taqueria that rolls its own beautiful flour tortillas to make some of the finest tacos in San Antonio. A great spot for breakfast as well as lunch.

Rosita’s

A friendly Nebraska cafe with south-of-the-border décor, Rosita's makes everything from scratch, even the amazing puffy corn chips.

Boca Tacos Y Tequila

The attitude at Boca Tacos is punk, but the cooking is accomplished. Expect the unexpected in the way of fillings and salsas. It's a Tucson best bet.

Pico de Gallo is a Tucson taqueria serving the city's best tacos. Also: pico de gallo (chile-spiked fruit salad) & coctel de elote (cheese & corn soup/stew).

Best Fish Taco in Ensenada

Cooked-to-order fish and shrimp tacos are the only selections at this small Los Angeles-area restaurant, and they are utterly fantastic. Payment is cash only.

What makes Tito's tacos so good is is fresh red salsa. For even more kick: green salsa of diced, pickled jalapeno peppers.
