Along with New Jersey, New York, and Chicago, Connecticut is one of the nation’s most fruitful hot dog hunting grounds. In this land of great hot dogs you find dozens of joints that make the cooking and dressing of wieners into a fine culinary art. No single style typifies the state. Deep-frying, as at Blackie’s and Rawley’s, is a hallmark of several of the great frank emporia. Expect complicated and sometimes ferocious relish, as at Super Duper Weenie and Al’s Hot Dog Stand. Most of the top-tier dogs come in split-top buns that are buttered and grilled. Needless to say, none of these cheap-eats shrines likely will be winning awards from the nutrition police. (Not even Kamp Dog, which shares a building with Fiddleheads, a health-oriented food co-op!) This honor roll highlights five favorite places to eat wieners across The Constitution State, land of great hot dogs.
Hot dogs at Blackie's of Cheshire, Connecticut, are plumpies oil-boiled to the point that they erupt with flavor. Pepper-hot relish is a must!
