Central Grocery

923 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA - (504) 523-1620
Central Grocery is home of the muffuletta, one of New Orleans' great sandwiches. A circular loaf of soft Italian bread is sliced horizontally and piled with salami, ham, and provolone, which are in turn topped with a wickedly spicy melange of chopped green and black olives fragrant with anchovies and garlic.

Pronounced Muff-a-lotta by natives, this mighty sandwich is actually the size of four normal-size sandwiches; accordingly, it is served quartered.

Everything about a Central Grocery muffuletta is good, but what sends it over the top is the extra-delicious olive salad.

It's the spicy, pickly, garlicky olive salad that gives muffalettas their distinctive taste. It is so unctuous that its piquancy seeps right into the bread.

Four quarters is plenty of sandwich for two people. Half sandwiches are also available.
