Bethel Hot Dog Palace - Bethel, CT

The star of the show is the mighty foot-long, natural-casing Hummel brand hot dog. You can get it plain, with chili or cheddar or both. The chili is fine-grind beef with a tongue-tingling kick. There are no beans and frankly, I find a bowl of it with nothing else rather overwhelming. But on dogs or hamburgers, or piled onto French fries, to simply topped with lots of orange melty cheese, it's good stuff.

Texas Dog: a voluptuous foot-long wiener topped with a mantle of melted cheese, a spill of peppery chili, lots of bacon, and raw onions. The bun is toasted and in comparison to its ingredients tastes almost sweet. This is not a sophisticated frank, but when the Tube Steak Siren calls, it fills the bill.

This handsome chili dog only comes in the footlong length, and we should've ordered chili fries for extra spiciness.

The dining area is an enclosed porch through the door and to the right. To the left is the portal to an open patio for nice-weather meals.
