River Edge Restaurant - Saukville, WI

We recommend River Edge Restaurant for breakfast north of Milwaukee because it opens at 4:30am(!) While we don't love the bratwurst, the bacon is some of the best you’ll find in any roadside café: double-thick, smoky-flavored, and delicious. River Edge pancakes are good; its potato pancakes are even better. They are ultra-thin and moist with crisp lacy edges.

This is the classic small town restaurant where everyone knows everyone else. The U-shaped counter is the focus of the dining room.

Thick bacon and lace-edge potato pancakes, with apple sauce on the side: a winning combination.

Bratwurst is the meat of choice in this part of Wisconsin -- for breakfast as well as lunch. here, it is butterflied and fried, served with over-easy eggs and toast.

Frankly, we're stumped by the name of this restaurant. Here's the sign, but the business card says
"Frankly, we're stumped by the name of this restaurant. Here's the sign, but the business card says "Riversedge" (one word), and we've seen it written as "River's Edge." Whatever it's called, it is an old-fashioned truck stop cafe, just a hop off I-43."
