Guida's - Middlefield, CT

The extra-long hot dogs at Guida's drive-in are so tasty that we sometimes get it plain, just to savor the simple, perfect combination of high-flavored frank and butter-mellow bun. But of course there is a full roster of available toppers, including three kinds of mustard, chili and cheese.

"Other than an exterior face lift and some fresh neon signage, we’re not sure what exactly is new about the restaurant that calls itself New Guida’s. The hot dogs taste like the same excellent ten-inchers we’ve been enjoying at this happy-go-lucky drive-in for a few ..."   [Read More].

"Breakfast is quite exceptional. The pancakes, while huge, are very light and fluffy. One can get fresh fruit added to them for a special treat. None of that canned, goo-laden fruit-like food product here. There should be waffles, but one cannot expect everything! ..."   [Read More].

What is missing from this picture of two ten-inch chili dogs? The answer, of course, is mustard. A line of the right yellow stuff finishes off the sweet, meaty chili with authority.

"Guida's menu boasts of serving Angus burgers. The meat does taste good, but I felt the patty a bit stingy on size. The "Rancher" configuration adds a delicious tangle of fried-soft onions on top, plus cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce. The bun is soft and absorbent and, while by no means a sophisticated breadstuff, the perfect mitt for this drive-in sandwich."

Split buns such as this are a New England custom; their design makes them easy to butter and cook on the grill right next to the lovely hot dogs they envelop.

The $6.25 Rancher includes not only the deluxe hamburger but a serving of pretty good French fries.

At the junction of Route 66 and 147, Guida's has been a hot-dog haven for more than half a century. Not visible left of the photo: picnic tables for al fresco dining.

The two-for-one special is a great bargain. A pair of these hot dogs is twenty-inches of tube steak. With a side of fries or onion rings and a milk shake, that's a mighty meal.
