Located on the fringe of downtown Houston, Irma's Restaurant is a soulful Mexican joint artfully run by its namesake owner. The restaurant has expanded over the years with new additions and terraces, but the food and experience still remains intact. If you dine in the original section of the restaurant you will be accompanied by a packed room filled with kitschy souvenirs collected over the years. Irma is actively involved in taking orders, serving food, and conversing with the customers; it feels like you are dining in her house.

All meals begin with homemade chips and medium-spiced salsa. Be sure to wash it down with a margarita on the rocks. For starters we ordered lentil soup and pork tamales. The broth-based soup blended with bits of vegetables and beef went down very easily. Tender pork tamales were served with a side of homemade green chili salsa that warmed the mouth.

For entrees, fish tacos are served inside homemade tortillas and topped with fresh ingredients. The chicken mole enchiladas were tender, subtlety sweet and spicy. None of the food at Irma's is extraordinarily spicy, where you are grabbing a pitcher of water every couple of minutes; Irma prepares the meals so you taste the fresh mix of ingredients.

Be sure to finish the meal and cleanse the palate with light and airy sopapillas topped with nuts and honey. The soft interior of the dough was surrounded with a crispy fried perimeter.
