Wanda's

12870 H St., Nehalem, OR - (503) 368-8100

"You must stop in Nehalem," advised an Oregon foodie named Ashley when she heard I was heading south out of Cannon Beach. "Wanda's makes the best huevos rancheros you will ever eat." I do believe I have had better versions of the traditional borderland breakfast, but not within 1000 miles, and certainly not in a one-of-a-kind place like Wanda's.

Breakfast began with a cup of Oregon-excellent Sleepy Monk espresso. Even more potent beverage options include Irish coffee and bloody Mary as well as something called a "laughing Wanda," which is vodka with orange juice and peach nectar.

Following Ashley's advice, I went for the hot-breakfast menu and a plate of huevos rancheros. They are kaleidoscopic: corn tortillas topped with black beans and great flows of pepper jack cheese, and salsa, all crowned with a pair of fried eggs and chopped green onions.

Here you see a small order of biscuits and gravy: one big one, split and smothered.

What better way to start the day than a cup of thick, inky Oregon espresso?

A rare sight: Wanda's without a line of people waiting for a table. The photo was taken at 8:02am, just after opening.
