Snow White Grill

159 N. Loudoun St., Winchester, VA - (540) 662-5955

Back in the day, the diminutive Snow White Grill on Loudon Street served thousands of mini-hamburgers in bustling downtown Winchester. Nowadays, Loudon Street is closed to cars and has become a pedestrian mall dotted with families, couples walking hand-in-hand, mothers pushing strollers, and kids running about the revitalized downtown. Rick and Jan Childs took over Snow White Grill, continuing the landmark’s legacy that started in 1949. The mini-burger is still the signature menu item, though the Childs have added breakfast sandwiches, pork BBQ in a tomato-based sauce, and cheesesteak subs, the latter of which has become a runaway hit with patrons.

Fresh ground beef, made into tiny patties on a vintage machine in the basement, is transformed into their mini-burger—plus fried onions, cheese, and pickles—on the restaurant’s small griddle, and two burgers make a fine meal, unless you’re keen on tasting other items. Noteworthy are the chili dog with a squiggle of mustard, the pork BBQ mounted with fresh slaw, and the homey chicken salad. Red birch beer is our go-to choice from the soda fountain, and the creamy milkshakes are served alongside the silver beaker in which they were mixed. We prefer tater tots over French fries whenever possible, and they’ll even smother them with gooey cheese for an extra forty cents. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Snow White Grill is an important stop on Virginia’s Roadfood trail.

The signature sandwich of the Snow White Grill is the mini-burger, and their griddle is classically covered with sizzling patties, onions, and steaming buns during peak hours.

You get your choice of white or orange cheese on the grilled cheese sandwich. The counterman suggested some of each.

This snappy hot dog with meaty chili is another worthy menu item.

Though some patrons swear by the French fries, we'll choose the crispy tater tots instead.

It's doubtful that the tomato-sauced pork is made in-house, but the homemade cole slaw elevates this BBQ sandwich above the norm.

Typical to Southern kitchens, this mayonnaise-heavy chicken salad is a somewhat lighter alternative to burgers and dogs.

This tall milkshake is served the old-fashioned way, with the mixing beaker half-full of extra shake.

Red birch beer is a treat anywhere, and Snow White Grill keeps it on the fountain.

Is a 'Mini-burger' a slider if it's not wafer-thin?

Apparently there was a glassware shortage the day we visited. The milkshake had to be drunk from its silver beaker ... which was just dandy.
