Red Truck Bakery

22 Waterloo St., Warrenton, VA - (540) 347-2224

The Red Truck Bakery is a charming little spot in a former gas station at Courthouse Square in Warrenton's Old Town. Some of its unique specialties are 160-proof moonshine double-chocolate cake, suet-rich real mince pie, and bourbon cake that includes honey-sweetened root beer and Montmorency cherries. The bakery case contains harvest wheat bread with cranberries, golden raisins, and walnuts; a variety of savory, cheesy, and slightly sweet focaccias; dinner rolls, baguettes, croissants, and coffee cakes.

Hungry travelers passing through Warrenton will want to avail themselves of any and all of this inventory for which they have enough utensils/napkins/picnic table space. But if you want to sit down and eat, there is a very nice little option: a room between the bakery cases and the kitchen with one large communal table for dining in. Alas, the cakes and pies are available only whole, so unless you have really big appetite, they are not practical for eating here. But there are some wonderful sandwiches: chicken salad made from local chickens, egg salad made with eggs laid by those local chickens, ham and local (of course) cheese; plus soup and a full assortment of Route 11 potato chips.

Service is grab-and-go. Choose your sandwich from among those that remain in the case (by the end of lunch hour, supplies start running out), take a beverage (we love the honey-sweetened Red Truck root beer), and pay. Then carry it out to the office, your car dashboard, or, if there's room, to the communal table. When you're done, it would be polite to gather up wrappers and napkins and toss them in the trash.

Maybe the best chicken salad sandwich anywhere: freshly roasted local chicken is combined with walnuts, grapes, apples, raisins, and a sprinkle of curry on rugged harvest wheat bread.

The birdseed cookie is tender and moist, just sweet enough, and among its poppy and black sesame seeds is the fetching sweet licorice twist of anise. It's Red Truck's cookie of the day every Tuesday.

Chef Brian Noyes, pictured here with his red truck, is a man on a mission to make extraordinarily delicious baked goods. IMO, mission accomplished!

I have yet to do a side-by-side comparison of the granola made by The Cottage in La Jolla – for many years, my choice as #1 – and Red Truck Bakery granola; but for now, I affirm that the Red Truck's is one of the two best granolas these taste buds have ever enjoyed. It is very fruity with massive amounts of golden raisins and either blueberries or cranberries (your choice), chock-a-block with walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds, slightly coconutty, and sweetened with maple syrup and local honey.

Fresh, local eggs make Red Truck egg salad rich and sunny. It is dotted with homemade pickles, bedded on bibb lettuce, and sandwiched in sunflower-dotted wheat bread. In the foreground are Route 11 potato chips -- dill pickle flavored -- which the lady behind the counter recommended as egg salad's boon companion. She was right.

Located in what once was an Esso gas station, the Red Truck still has its bay doors in place.

Excellent root beer, bottled for the Red Truck Bakery, happens to be one of the ingredients that goes into the house special bourbon cake.
