St. Francis Fountain

2801 24th St., San Francisco, CA - (415) 826-4200

"Where have you been all our lives?" Jane and I wondered as we finished off a Forty-Niner at the St. Francis Fountain, a charming little eatery that opened in 1918, closed in 2002, but then reopened with a fresh coat of paint but the same sweet lunch-counter menu and a retro-hip attitude. All of what the St. Francis Fountain serves is familiar and comforting – omelets and egg scrambles for breakfast, bacon cheddar burgers, swell milk shakes and real egg creams – and the Forty-Niner is no exception, but it combines two comfort foods in one: the basic BLT and excellent egg salad. Not an unusual egg salad, but just right: the eggs well chopped but not pulverized, only enough mayo to make it smooth, and a shot of relish to perk it up. The eggs are what star, which is why the salad is such a good match for a BLT that is well-endowed with bacon.

Seating is at a counter or in wooden booths. Be prepared to wait, especially on weekends.

The Baltimore puts bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and mayo on grilled sourdough toast. WE loved the combination of different flavors and textures.

With plenty of crusty top layer of macaroni, the mac and cheese was the best of the sides we tried.

The raspberry shake was so thick, the straws were all but useless. You will definitely need a spoon!

Half egg salad sandwich, half club sandwich, the Forty Niner is a joy to eat!
