St. Francis Fountain

2801 24th St., San Francisco, CA - (415) 826-4200
Posted By Michael Stern on 4/25/2015 5:47:00 AM
The St. Francis Fountain is a charming little eatery that opened in 1918, closed in 2002, but then reopened with a fresh coat of paint but the same sweet lunch-counter menu and a retro-hip attitude. All of what the St. Francis Fountain serves is familiar and comforting – omelets and egg scrambles for breakfast, bacon cheddar burgers, swell milk shakes and real egg creams. Highlights of the menu include a breakfast item titled "Nebulous Potato Thing" (spuds, melted cheese, salsa, sour cream and an optional egg, chicken-cilantro soup served over a biscuit, and a vegetarian Reuben made with spinach, mushrooms, onions, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and 1000 Islands dressing.

Seating is at a counter or in wooden booths. Be prepared to wait, especially on weekends.

The Baltimore puts bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and mayo on grilled sourdough toast. WE loved the combination of different flavors and textures.

With plenty of crusty top layer of macaroni, the mac and cheese was the best of the sides we tried.

The raspberry shake was so thick, the straws were all but useless. You will definitely need a spoon!
