Super Duper Weenie

306 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, CT - (203) 334-DOGS

I concur with the commentary. The food at this restaurant actually tastes like something special. Most hotdogs taste salty. You maybe taste some mustard flavor, but there isn't a lot of complexity to the dish. The dogs at Super Duper taste as complex as a fine wine, and offer taste sensations that are usually confined to home cooked meals. It's obvious that the proprietors of this establishment care enough about the product to insist on quality ingredients, and careful preparation. I drive two hours from Massachusetts just to sample their cuisine. It's worth the drive.

What a Pair! Two New Englanders, topped with sauerkraut, bacon, mustard, sweet relish, and raw onion. The bacon is buried underneath the dogs, and the mustard is eclipsed by the sauerkraut and sweet relish.

There is nothing fancy or outrageous about it, but this just might be the Platonic hamburger, i.e. ground beef perfection. It is a 6.5 ounce mound of ground chuck and sirloin that is wildly juicy and, with Chef Gary's wicked-good salt-n-peppered crust, insanely flavorful.

Three sizes of French fries are available. This is a 'small' boat. Fries are an essential part of the Super Duper Weenie dining experience.

This is a single order of onion rings ($2.50). It's not a huge quantity, but each one is a multi-bite item to savor.

Locally-made Miller's-brand franks are split and grilled, ready to be bunned.

Super Duper Weenie recently added the capabability to make milk shakes. This chocolate shake is thick enough to support a straw. Strawberry shakes are made directly from pureed strawberries.

Traditionalists miss the mobile truck that was Super Duper Weenie (and is now SDW's catering operation, but this firmly-planted restaurant has all the charm and sass of the eatery-on-wheels ... and the same fantastic food.

A close view of the Chicagoan shows how the split dog is laid upon tomato slices and is, in turn, topped with condiments.

One of the great things to eat other than a hot dog: the Mighty-Ity. Short for 'Mighty Italian,' it is sweet or hot sausage with grilled peppers and onions and cheese on a Portuguese roll.

Chef Gary was lamenting to us that local ordinances have virtually eliminated neon signs from the Fairfield landscape. His sign is legal because it is behind the window rather than in front of it.
