Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale

86 Boston Post Road, Westbrook, CT - (860) 669-0767

Lenny & Joe's opened as a roadside fried-clam stand in 1979. It has since become big business, its two locations on the Post Road in Madison and Westbrook offering broad menus of not only the fried seafood for which it is famous, but of broiled, char-grilled and sauteed seafood and, of course, lobsters. You can start a meal with classic clear-broth quahog chowder and, in the summer, side it with good, fresh sweet corn.

Whole-bellied fried clams vary in size, but you can bank on Lenny & Joe's to deliver them with toasty, golden crust that melts when you crunch it. We love the fried shrimp and scallops, even simple fried fish. All fried items are available in an ample regular size configuration as well as a "super" plate with double the amount of fish. This is one restaurant where the undecided customer who craves the crunch of fresh-fried seafood will be happy ordering a variety platter with some of everything. It is a gargantuan meal (and, at $20+, substantially priced), including crinkle-cut French fries and a cup of cole slaw. The only other necessary item would be an order of fried onions; they are slim and sweet with crust that is impossibly fragile, making them impossible to stop eating.

Lenny & Joe's is a reliable source for a hot lobster roll, meaning chunks and shreds of lobster meat glistening with butter and heaped into a butter-toasted long bun. This is pure bliss, with none of the whole-lobster hassle of shell-cracking and meat-extraction. In season, the kitchen also offers a soft-shell crab roll that is divine.

By the way, seafood frowners: Lenny's split hot dogs are not to be dissed.

NOTE: In addition to the Westbrook address listed with the review, Lenny's is located at 1301 Boston Post Rd. in Madison. The number there is 203-245-7289.

The hot lobster roll, invented in Milford, Connecticut, in 1929, is held to high standards at Lenny & Joe's. It isn't a gigantic sandwich, but its taste is huge.

A sign on the menu warned that whole belly clams were running small the September day I stopped in. No problem. Each had enough marine succulence to be a mighty mouthful, with none of the overbearing avoirdupois of a clam with a too-large belly.

There were so many clams on my clam dinner that I worried I wouldn't be able to finish all the onion rings. I should have known better. These crispy critters beckon until the last little crumb of crust is lifted off its cardboard plate.

The scallops are so sweet you'd swear you're eating candy plucked straight from the sea. The onion rings are a guilty pleasure and one of the reasons we drive out of our way to go to Lenny and Joe's.

The super size portion of the Fried Gulf Shrimp dinner can easily be shared by two people. 32 medium size shrimp, a large portion of french fries, and a portion of coleslaw round out the portion. All for $15.95.
