Clam Shack

Route 9, Kennebunkport, ME - (207) 967-2560
Lobster rolls at the Clam Shack are abundant. Meat from an entire one-pound lobster is picked from the shell in immense pieces (no shreds here), loaded into a delicious locally baked roll, then drizzled with melted butter (or, if you wish, dolloped with mayonnaise). Al fresco dining only.

"If I listed my five best Roadfood dining experiences, I would have to say The Clam Shack is one of them. Our family loves to go there and order a lobster roll apiece and a couple of orders of fried clams. The rolls are filled with luscious lobster and hot butter. ..."   [Read More]

"We are big Roadfood fans and have discovered many fantastic places through this book. However, I would have to say the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport was a giant disappointment after visiting so many other lobster pounds and seafood shacks on the Maine coast. We stopped ..."   [Read More]

"To our chagrin, my wife Connie and I missed the Clam Shack on most of our numerous trips to Kennybunkport. This was simply because the restaurant is so small and inconspicuous. However, after reading of it in Road Food, I made a point to try it. We both ordered the ..."   [Read More]

"I live in Kennebunkport and recall that the first time I was ever introduced to fried clams it was at "the Shack" and they have always been as good as those first succulent morsels. After living in K-port for most of my life, and putting in 20 seasons at area ..."   [Read More]

Here is lobster-lover's heaven: a cup of nothing but moist, tender knuckle meat fairly bursting with flavor.

Steve Kingston, Clam Shack proprietor, worried out loud to us about his dilemma: to serve inferior clams from Canada, or to serve no clams at all? Many businesses up and down the shore don't have to worry about that issue because their clams come frozen, and are the same all the time.

Fried clam quality depends on how the clams are running. During my last visit, they were running fine, and this was one heck of a delicious clam roll.

While there is no formal dining area at the Clam Shack, these makeshift seats are a good place to dine. They'll even boil a lobster for you inside the store next to the shack.

Richard Jacques founded The Clam Shack, and in 2001 sold it to Steve Kingson, a local boy who learned the ropes across the bridge at Marie's ice cream. Steve has promised long-time fans he has no intention of changing anything about this marvelous eatery.
