Cincinnati Chili and Beyond

Cincinnati chili is an American icon, but north of the Queen City is an array of great eats, both funky and fine. This road trip starts with a plate of five-way, then heads north into the countryside to find a wonderful chocolate factory, an old-fashioned grist mill (serving corn meal mush!), an extra thick milk shake and, finally, one of the great steak dinners anywhere, in Dayton.

Camp Washington Chili Parlor - Cincinnati , OH
Cincinnatians are mad for five-way chili, which is spiced meat atop spaghetti noodles, topped with beans, cheese, and onions. Many agree that Camp Washington makes the best. This one-of-a-kind hash house features all the proper ambiance, including a great gleaming neon clock on the back wall and great vats of bubbling chili. The air smells of onions and spice; and by late in the morning the dining room is packed with cheap-eats fans who fork their way into plates of five-way and heft chili-cheese Coneys and mile-high double-decker sandwiches.
Golden Turtle - Lebanon , OH
The Golden Turtle is a full-service chocolate shop with a wide variety of caramels, creams, and nuts enrobed in light or dark chocolate. It is best known for two very special products: almond toffee and the Texas tortoise.
Clifton Mill - Clifton , OH
Hankering for a good plate of corn meal mush or buckwheat cakes with rugged-textured sausage? How about a pair of biscuits the size of softballs, accompanied by a vast bowl full of creamy sausage gravy? If those are your likin’s, come to Clifton Mill and feast. This genuine water-powered grist mill, the largest in the U.S., has a rustic dining room with a view of Clifton Gorge and the huge mill wheel turning just outside.
Young's Jersey Dairy - Yellow Springs , OH
Using ice cream and milk from their own farm, Young’s blends regular shakes and extra-thick shakes (spoon required), as well as bullshakes that are extra-large, extra-thick, and come with one additional scoop of ice cream floating on top. There are exotic flavors galore, but give us a vanilla or chocolate shake every time, preferably with plenty of malt powder added.
Pine Club - Dayton , OH
This is a place to which people come for highballs at the bar and splendid cuts of beef at the table. You have your choice of filet mignon, porterhouse, or sirloin, each cut and aged on premises and cooked on a grill so the outside gets crusty dark but the inside is still bursting with flavorful beef juices.
