I never would discourage anyone from waiting in line for beignets and cafe au lait at the venerable Cafe du Monde in the French Market -- it is a New Orleans experience all should have. But for classic beignets in an idyllic setting and without the long wait in line, check out the new location of Morning Call in City Park. With its marble counters, bare-bulb light fixtures, tile floors, and huge steel coffee urns, it conjures the original (since 1870) Morning Call. The beignets are fine and fluffy, the cafe au lait is strong, and it is open 24/7 every day but Christmas. (Morning Call in Metarie Roadfood.com review)
