As of Monday, April 1st, Chink's Steaks of Philadelphia (see the review) will rename itself Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop. The cheesesteak specialist was opened in 1949 by Sam Sherman, who had the childhood nickname Chink because his friends thought his eyes made him look Chinese. The current owner, since 1979, is Joe Groh, and he says he's changing the name because he does not want to inadvertantly alienate anyone.

This is either an early April Fool's Day joke, or it's true and ridiculous...if it hasn't offended (alienated) anyone by now, it's not going to...and if it does at this point in its history, well maybe they're are the ones losing out if they're going to be that stupid.

Jennifer, I think they've received a lot of flak over the years for keeping the name. I posted a cheesesteak photo from Chink's on the RF Facebook page last year and got more than a few negative comments over the name (not the food). If the name change nets them more customers, then I'm behind that -- because it truly is one of Philly's best cheesesteaks. And GREAT milkshakes, too!

Jennifer, sorry; I'm Italian and a shop called, say, Wop's, would offend me regardless of food, era or some non-Italian's view that I'm being ridiculous.
