Colucci's Hilltop Market of Portland, Maine suffered extensive damage from a fire started by an arsonist in the apartments above the store early Saturday morning. Co-owner Dickie Colucci expects the store to remain closed for a couple of months. No one was hurt but a dog and two cats perished in the blaze, which also totally destroyed the three upstairs apartments, one of which was Mr. Colucci's residence. Damage could have been much worse if not for the fact that the fire house is directly across the street from the store. The suspected arsonist has been arrested.

Michael Stern, in his Roadfood.com review of Colucci's, said the grocery "may be the best place in Portland to get a real Italian – the submarine sandwich unique to Maine."

Not withstanding the pain of losing a business and home, I was very saddened to hear of the death of two cats and a dog. I'm very happy to know they've arrested the suspected arsonist.
