It's got the look, right? Battered half-sheet pan with wax paper, haphazardly shaped rough oblong pie... this could be New Haven! Alas, it was not to be. Piece's pies are eminently ordinary. Not bad, mind you. If we were local college students, and this was down the street, and we had pitchers of the good beer on the table, (and we'd never been to New Haven), we'd probably be happy. But the pies were an over-topped, sodden mess, and the flavors just weren't there.

We won't even count the awful guacamole against Piece. We should have known better than to order it.

Goodness, if it is that bad, why eat there at all, when there are so many excellent pizza places in Chicago and environs? And I say that as a former starving Northwestern student (granted, in the 1970s).

Well, it wasn't THAT bad, but your point is a good one, in that there's enough good pizza in Chicago that there's little reason to settle for mediocre. They are also a brewpub, though, and the beer's good. The place was packed and rowdy like a frat party, so it's making some people happy, apparently.
