The newest branch of Grimaldi's (see the Roadfood.com review of the Scottsdale, AZ Grimaldi's) will open today at 5 p.m. on Long Island, NY in Sea Cliff. The address is 243 Glen Cove Avenue. Mike Napoli is the owner. The pizza chain is also coming to California for the first time this year, with the first of six planned Golden State restaurants scheduled to open in El Segundo, at 2121 Rosecrans Avenue, this spring.

This is great, because California certainly needs it. I hope they're considering South Carolina next!

Ate at Grimaldi's last week in West Palm Beach.
Salad was good....Pizza Not that great!

Yesterday I walked by the soon-to-be-Grimaldi's location in El Segundo and saw the banner announcing that Grimaldi's would open this summer. It can't be soon enough for this SoCal gal; it's a pizza desert here. My skeptical soul wonders, though, how they can create an East-coast pie without the coal oven or their Eastern water supply.

El Segundo will have a coal oven - actually, two coal ovens. Grimaldi's claims to have a chemist on staff who alters the local water supply to match that of Brooklyn, NY. That said, although many aficionados claim water details are critical to the success of pizza crust, I am very skeptical. Grimaldi's, the chain, is also known to tailor the pie to the local tastes. One of the results is that the pies receive less time in the oven in non-Northeast locations. People in most of the country don't like their pizza as well done.
