If you live in Chicago, you’d never dream of doing a Chicago dog at home, because no matter where you are in the city it seems you’re never more than a few steps from someone who does it for a living. But what about those of us who fall in love with the Windy City way with dogs and then have to return home? How are we supposed to satisfy our cravings? The yellow mustard, Kosher-style pickle spear, fresh tomato wedges, chopped fresh onions, and celery salt we can handle. Sport peppers and Christmas-green Chicago relish? We have to find substitutes. Poppy-seeded hot dog buns? Have to use plain ones. Chicago’s famous Vienna Beef franks? Gotta use the local dog. What we end up with is something reminiscent of a Chicago dog, but…
Why make do when you can create the real thing at home? For $89.99, Vienna Beef (see the review of the factory store and restaurant) will send you their Chicago Style Hot Dog Kit. You get 16 dogs, along with a lovely matching set of poppy seed buns.  Also included: celery salt, yellow mustard, and bright green relish (sport peppers are also available). You can place your order online. This is a gift guaranteed to bring joy to your favorite Chicagoland expat.

My cousin from N.C. had never experienced a Chicago style dog before-so we made them at home( I had all the proper stuff) when she visited. She fell in love. For her birthday, we sent her the package you wrote about( 4 yrs. ago it was 59.99)Absolutely her favorite gift, and it was sent from Vienna promptly and fresh.

When we posted this in 2008 we said the price was $29.99! Is that possible or was that a typo? The current $89.99 includes 2nd Day Air shipping, which may account for some of the price difference.

Possibly-I dont argue that point.

Are You kidding me? Vienna has been ripping people off for the past few years on this mail order stuff including italian beef. If you do the math, you are talking about $5.00 per dog. Give me a break.

This is pure greed!

The pricing for refrigerated packaging and 2nd Day Air shipping is astronomical and has absolutely nothing to do with greed or ripping anyone off. Check out the prices of mail order seafood or steaks and you'll discover that the packaging and the shipping is more expensive than the product. Here's the thing: at $5+ per dog this is not a gift for someone who lives in the Chicago area. It's something special for someone who lives away. chicagostyle dog is right, it's the shipping/packaging. Same thing happens with BBQ by mail - only makes sense if you don't live in BBQ country, and even then only if you can afford the splurge.

Okay, what's the shipping cost?
