Short Sugar Q
Our State, a monthly magazine exploring life in North Carolina, this month presents an extended, in-depth feature on what they call the Barbecue Kings of their state. The piece, based on Bob Garner's Book of Barbecue, is available online. Six of the ten Q kings featured are also reviewed here at Roadfood.com, including Short Sugar's (that's their barbecue pictured above, from the Roadfood.com review).

Bruce and Susan: thanks for leading me to that wonderful article. IMHO, Eastern Carolina minced whole hog 'cue is the best in the world; Anthony Bourdain shares that opinion (though not as humbly) - even after visiting Franklin's in Austin! Wilber Shirley RULES!

Carolina Q has been the big hole in our Roadfooding. We've never been there! Have to rectify that.

Our only taste of Carolina Q was what you brought back for us. It was fantastic! Also, very unique, nothing like Q from anywhere else we've ever been. We have to plan a trip at some point. Do you put South Carolina Q in the mix too?

Not with NC BBQ, but I do love it. SC shacks are not quite as consistent as NC shacks, though there are a few exceptional places.

I live in Greensboro; home of Stamey's, which I love and also home to Country BBQ, which is pretty fine too. Our State is a great magazine. I have subscribed to it for a couple of years now and it always has tons of food articles.
