The Mecca
The Mecca has been in business in Dallas, TX since 1938, at its current location on Harry Hines since 1968 (see the Roadfood.com review). A new era for the diner begins next week, as The Mecca is moving to East Dallas. They'll be closing after business this Sunday, August 12th, and are hoping to be open at 5815 Live Oak Street on Friday, August 17th. There's talk of a price-rollback and retro uniforms for their Sunday sendoff.

Why the move? The building (which they don't own) is falling apart, and the neighborhood stinks, which is why they currently close at 2:30 p.m. daily. They will be offering dinner in the new restaurant, which manager Cheryl Hurt says is necessary to their financial health.

Is it really that bad of a neighborhood? Of course, I have only been there during the day.

I don't know personally, but that's what manager Cheryl Hurt says.

The (old) neighborhood has become over the last 10 years, primarily an Hispanic light industrial area with the restaurants in the area catering to that demographic. Quite a difference from what that neighborhood on Harry Hines Blvd. used to be. Their new location to the heart of Lakewood (East Dallas) will be perfect for them! And, as I don't live very far from their new restaurant, perfect for me too! I'm really looking forward to enjoying their southern style comfort food once again. http://www.themeccarestaurant.com/weremoving.htm

This is great news for us. After we moved to Dallas, based on reviews I just had to try this place. When we got there Mrs. Metro refused to leave the vehicle. Dallas desperately needs a Long-Island/Jersey-style diner and not yet another CFS joint. As Mecca will now be serving dinner I can only hope that this sad void will be filled in what is otherwise a very interesting "food town".

(Actually, Michael was being polite: he forgot to mention the strip clubs, massage parlors, and street "flesh vendors" - to say nothing of the gang-banging "wall art" that pervades their old 'hood).

Good riddance. The manager is talking down a neighborhood where the problems are isolated to just a few trouble spots. HH and Lombardy isn't a bad corner at all.
