Cookbook
"We put all the recipes from the restaurant in the book except for the barbecue sauce." That's Salt Lick owner Scott Roberts talking to Texas Monthly about the new Salt Lick cookbook, due out in November (see the Roadfood.com review of Salt Lick). So you won't get the famous sauce, but you will get everything else, and a lot more than recipes. From the Salt Lick website: "This is not a book just about Salt Lick barbecue. It’s about how the barbecue came to be: a story of respect for the land, its history, and the family that planted its roots in Driftwood and cultivated a well-deserved reputation." Is it too early to be thinking about Christmas gifts?

I spent a week in hill country in April, we made a point to make it to Salt Lick. Very disappointed. We have BBQ that good on FL.Lockhart was great!

I see this place on T.V. more than any other Texas eating establishment; Bobby Flay, Adam Richman, Guy Fieri, et al. nearly slobber in praise of it (Bobby Flay especially!). Yet, Texans seem generaly to have disdain for the place. What's going on here?

As a recent (2005) citizen of the Republic of Texas I simply can't see what could go wrong with meat, smoke, and fire - all of which the Salt Lick has in abundance. So, we'll try it anyway and see.
