It'll be a scorching Fourth of July for much of the country today, but probably not as hot as it was for Bruce's nephew Geoff, who consumed a whole, raw bhut jolokia and lived to tell the tale:

What is this "milk" you have placed before me, young Skywalker? That pitiful ghost pepper is no match for the awesome power of my fully operational, cast-iron stomach!

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the Ghost Pepper isn't the world's hottest pepper. According to scientists at New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute the hottest pepper known now is the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, which tested out at 1.5 million to 2 million Scoville units. The so-called Ghost Pepper runs between 855,000 and 1.4 million Scoville units.

You are correct, Michael, but to be fair to Geoff: this is actually a three-year-old recording, and at the time, it WAS considered the hottest pepper. He posted it a few days ago on Facebook with the note that, this August, he plans to take on the Butch-T, which is the Trinidad Scorpion Butch-T pepper, which surpassed the ghost pepper in 2011. I don't know if he realizes yet that the Butch-T was passed by the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion this year.

Well, there's no way I'd try a Ghost Pepper, let alone anything even hotter.

Bruce, would you tell us how this affected Geoff the next day?
