Rocky Mountain Oysters
Those are Rocky Mountain oysters pictured above, as served at the Buckhorn Exchange in Denver, CO (see the Roadfood.com review). What are Rocky Mountain oysters? You probably don't want to know. But they're not oysters. Some foods are assigned euphemistic names to bypass the inherently unappetizing nature of the food, or sometimes the unappetizing real name of the food. Hence, orange roughy instead of slimehead. It's these food euphemisms that are the topic of discussion when Jane and Michael Stern pay a visit to Lynne Rossetto Kasper of The Splendid Table this weekend. The show can be heard on your local public radio station. You can also listen in to the Sterns' appearance online, and even hear Lynne's whole show online. While you listen, we recommend munching on a platter of city chicken. We like to serve it with Arkansas wedding cake.
