Coney consciousness in Michigan is at an all-time high, most likely inspired by the recent publication of Katherine Yung and Joe Grimm's Coney Detroit. Metro Times posted a story about the best coneys to be found in the state. Their list of 14 top dogs includes Detroit's Lafayette Coney Island (see the Roadfood.com review) and their next-door neighbor American Coney Island.

John Gonzalez of Michigan Live, joined by Mr. Grimm, followed that up with the results of a week-long coney eat-a-thon, where he hit the road in search of the ten finest specimens in the state. #1 is American, which he claims serves a clearly better dog than #2 Lafayette, while conceding he prefers Lafayette's grittier atmosphere. Did you know there is a Detroit-style and a Flint-style? Detroit's coney sauce is just that, saucy, while Flint's is more like a pebbly chili topping. Eat up, tube steak lovers!
